The CBRA is a knowledge center for burden of disease and risk assessment methodology. It applies these methods to study the health and economic impact of public and animal health threats.

Currently, separate measures are used to estimate the impact of animal diseases on mortality and animal welfare. In a new study published in PLOS ONE, we introducesd a novel metric, the Welfare-Adjusted Life Year (WALY), to estimate disease impact by combining welfare compromise and premature death components.
